Negative Canthal Tilt: Meaning, Measurement and Photo Effects

Negative canthal tilt means the outer eye corner sits lower than the inner corner relative to a level reference. A photo measurement describes visible corner positions; it does not establish a person’s attractiveness or health.
What positive, neutral and negative canthal tilt mean
Draw a line from the inner corner of one eye to its outer corner. If the outer corner rises, the signed angle is positive; if it falls, the angle is negative. A nearly level line is often described as neutral. The canthal tilt calculator displays degrees for each eye so that you can inspect the measurement rather than rely on a label alone.
How this calculator levels the photograph
The tool estimates head roll from the upper face mesh point and chin, then measures the eye-corner lines relative to the corrected horizontal. Pixel aspect ratio is accounted for before angles are calculated. This reduces ordinary head-tilt effects but cannot remove perspective from a turned face. Use a relaxed, straight-on portrait with both eye corners visible and inspect the overlay for misplaced landmarks.
Why two photographs can give different results
Smiling, squinting, glasses, shadow and eye makeup can change which corner point the detector sees. A small difference of a few degrees may reflect photo conditions or landmark placement. Compare photographs taken at the same height and distance before interpreting a change. The left and right labels in this tool refer to the image sides, so a mirrored upload swaps which physical eye appears there.
Canthal tilt and the wider eye area
Canthal tilt describes one line, while an eye-area impression also includes lid opening, brows, surrounding shadows and expression. The internet label “hunter eyes” bundles several visual cues together and is not equivalent to a positive tilt reading. How to use a negative tilt result
First check the measured corner locations and repeat once with a clear, level photo if needed. A negative value is a geometric description, not a defect to fix. If your goal is styling, compare eyebrow framing, glasses or makeup in similar lighting and keep what you personally prefer. This tool does not diagnose eyelid conditions or recommend interventions from an angle.
